Being a young lawyer can seem attractive from the outside; at least to the uninformed , a person becomes rich immediately they are called to Bar. But this is far from the reality, being a lawyer does not necessarily guarantee your meal ticket and the pressures is always high especially high on young lawyers . This is understandably so, parents, guardians, sponsors have INVESTED hundreds of thousands if not millions in guaranteeing your entrance into the professional and
naturally there expect a good return on their INVESTMENT. So the question has always been asked how do young lawyers survive in the seemingly endless ocean of legal practitioners in the country today.
The first way to survive is to engage in the practice of low bono, Do not get scared of coming down to below the normal, your first aim is to get the patronage so forget the price and get the contacts first. ask a lot of questions and always see everything from its legal standpoint. especially to potential clients , give them free education on why they should register their company with the corporate affairs commission , get a lawyer to do conveyance transaction for them and other agreements, that they may want to do without lawyer.Be social, you may think your village or towns people meeting is full of illiterates and laymen but that is the place where you are most likely to get your fisrt clients , some of them have pending land cases, some need agreements that have to be prepared by lawyers and many of them need advice and assistance on how to negotiate a loan transaction. You are the learned man in their midst, key into this opportunity and get hooked up to a client that may connect you to your next big brief.Follow the fathers of the profession. Although pupil age is not as trendy as it used to be and the old lawyers with established rackets may not be willing to let you in to their treasure room . You must be willing to patiently follow the masters and patrons of the profession, this will minimise your errors and provide you with the platform to gain acess into lucrative practice.
